Like the fabled Cheshire cat in Lewis Caroll’s literary classic, Alice in Wonderland, Dimeji Bankole’s ambition to become the Ogun state governor is turning to a white elephant project, a dream that might never come to reality.
Crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State took a new twist on Wednesday as party members, consisting majorly loyalists of the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, defected to the Action Democratic Party.
Political analysts said the defection, might not be unconnected with the 2019 elections, as the ADP is being touted as a new mega party for the general elections.
The defection took place at the new party secretariat located inside the GRA, Ibara, Abeokuta, at the sidelines of an expanded stakeholders meeting of the ADP held on Tuesday.
A 72-member protem state executive committee of the party was inaugurated.
It has a former Commissioner for Housing in the state, Chief Wale Egunleti, emerged as chairman, while a former Director of Owena River Basin Development Authority, Mr Femi Sowunmi, emerged as the acting state secretary.
Egunleti and Sowunmi are close political associates of Bankole, who is equally expected to contests for the governorship seat in the state in 2019.
It will be recalled that the Ogun state chapter of the PDP had been enmeshed in factional crisis over the years, coupled with the leadership faceoff also rocking the party at the national level.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ADP State Publicity Secretary, Sunday Adeleye, confirmed the expanded stakeholders meeting where the 72-member protem executive was inaugurated.
He urged people in the state to embrace the new party, which according to him “is poised to deliver good governance, promote transparency and abolish all sort of impunity in governance.”
