As unusual as it was, the gesture of APC chieftain and former
Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to reach out to the masses
during the festive period of ramadan turned ugly this year as people
died and many were injured at the venue of the presentation of gifts and
materials in Lagos.
The Onikan stadium, Lagos venue of the Bola Tinubu’s Foundation of
free gifts turned to a slaughter slab as a stampede occurred where two
were feared killed while many sustained serious injuries.
The main victims were women and the children who were trampled upon
by the mammoth crowd that gathered to benefit from the freebies.
Sources blamed the logistics by the planners with claims that ‘there
was no proper arrangement on crowd control and there was not a single
ambulance at sight in readiness for a situation like this’.
The wounded were seen being ferried on stretchers to nearby hospitals while the dead were taken to the mortuary.
According to an eye witness. ‘I counted
5 dead bodies and several others that are wounded. Most of the dead
were the old and children who couldn’t regain their stand immediately
they fell and were trampled upon’.
A popular online portal, Societyreelnews contacted the coordinator
and special assistant to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the telephone and he
confirmed there was a stampede and claimed he could not speak on the
number of lives that were lost.
The unfortunate incident was said to have thrown the Lagos politician
into mourning as he had never experienced such in over a decade he had
been reaching out to the masses during the Sallah, Ramadan and Christmas
periods.
